About the Product

Since the dawn of man, percussion instruments have been around to remind people of the beating of their hearts and the shuffling of their feet. They reinforce or are the singular beat under which the rest of the musical instrumentation lies. Shakers come in many sizes and shapes. When they are shook, their seeds rattle inside the hollow to produce a high-pitched sound. The xequerê here is the largest of shakers. It is made from all natural materials that include gourd, seeds, and seashells. Its design originates on the African continent but has become popular in South America. It was carved by an artisan who’s not unlike Fausto, whom Raisa and companions meet in Destination Rio de Janeiro. With your purchase here, you support an ancient artform and those who practice it. Just like Raisa receives a shaker at the end of the excursion book, so too can the special child in your life!

Artisan Background

Shakers are produced by gourd carvers and decorators in the South American nation of Brazil. They are often fabricated from gourds that are dried, hollowed, stained, and decorated in a sustainable manner. They utilize ancient tools. The shakers are finished in a variety of ways, often with stain, paint, or with external percussive elements. Under reasonable care, these musical instruments are heirloom quality and can be handed down from generation to generation. Commissioned or purchased fair trade. Resold responsibly.

Care and Cleaning:

Wipe clean with a moist cloth, with or without using hand soap. Do not use rinse. Do not use brushes or any other abrasive surface to clean as this can damage the stained finished.

Refund/Exchange Policy

This is a one of a kind, handmade item. No two will be exactly alike. We consider this a final sale, and you trust and accept the craftsmanship “as is.”
